Functional Assessment-Based Interventions
(FABI; Umbreit, Ferro, Liaupsin & Lane, 2007):

A systematic approach to coordinating the functional behavior assessment (FBA) and behavior intervention plan (BIP).

FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT-BASED INTERVENTION (FABI) (POSTED NOVEMBER 3, 2015; UPDATED AUGUST 15, 2016)

A functional assessment-based intervention (FABI) is a systematic approach used to support students with the most intensive intervention needs with the goal of teaching students functionally equivalent replacement behaviors to support them in enjoying a high quality life. Umbreit, Ferro, Liaupsin, and Lane (2007) developed a systematic approach to identifying maintaining function(s) of target behaviors and designing interventions (BIP) directly linked to results of the functional behavior assessment (FBA).  In these materials, you will find resources to help you design, implement, and evaluate FABIs in your setting with this systematic approach. These include, brief video modules introducing this systematic five-step process and implementation materials to support your efforts.  For more information and resources on this strategy, please Functional Behavioral Assessment and Function-based Intervention: An Effective, Practical Approach (Umbreit, Ferro, Liaupsin, & Lane, 2007).

Video 1: Functional Assessment-based Interventions

FABI Welcome TRANSCRIPT
This brief video introduces viewers to the functional assessment-based intervention model developed by Umbreit, Ferro, Liaupsin and Lane (2007) and resources available on Ci3T.org.

Video 2: Overview of Step 1: Identifying Students Who Need a FABI

FABI Step 1 TRANSCRIPT

This brief video introduces viewers to Step 1: Identifying Students Who Need a FABI.  This is the first step in a five-step systematic approach to designing, implementing, and evaluating functional assessment-based interventions. This video describes procedures and tools to support this process.

Video 3: Overview of Step 2: Conducting the Functional Assessment

FABI Step 2 TRANSCRIPT

This brief video introduces viewers to Step 2: Conducting the Functional Assessment.  This is the second step in a five-step systematic approach to designing, implementing, and evaluating functional assessment-based interventions. This video describes procedures and tools to support this process.

Video 4: FABI Planning Form and Behavior Intervention Plan

FABI Planning Form TRANSCRIPT

This brief video introduces viewers to two tools: the FABI Planning Form and Behavior Intervention Plan. The FABI planning is used throughout the five-step process as an iterative document.  The final information will be transferred to the Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) and/or district standard forms after the conclusion of Step 5: Testing the Intervention.

Video 5: Operationally Defining Behavior: Target and Replacement Behaviors

FABI Operationally Defining Behavior TRANSCRIPT

This brief video introduces viewers to operationally defining two behaviors of interest: the target and replacement behavior. In this video we describe each behavior and a process for how to operationally defining a behavior.

Video 6: Function Matrix

FABI Function Matrix TRANSCRIPT

This video introduces viewers to Function Matrix, which is utilized in Step 2: Conducting the Functional Assessment.  The Function Matrix is a tool used to organize data collected throughout the functional assessment.

Video 7: Overview of Step 3: Collecting Baseline Data

FABI Collecting Baseline Data TRANSCRIPT

This brief video introduces viewers to Step 3: Collecting Baseline Data.  This is the third step in a five-step systematic approach to designing, implementing, and evaluating functional assessment-based interventions. This video describes procedures and tools to support this process.

Video 8: Behavior Dimension and Measurement Systems

FABI Behavior Dimensions Measurement Systems TRANSCRIPT

This brief video discuss how to identify an appropriate measurement system aligned to the behavior dimension of interest used in evaluating whether a functional-assessment-based intervention is effective.

Video 9: Overview of Step 4: Designing the Intervention

FABI Step 4 TRANSCRIPT

This brief video introduces viewers to Step 4: Designing the Intervention.  This is the fourth step in a five-step systematic approach to designing, implementing, and evaluating functional assessment-based interventions. This video describes procedures and tools to support this process.

Video 10: Function-based Intervention Decision Model

FABI Decision Model TRANSCRIPT

This video introduces viewers to Function-based Intervention Decision Model utilized in Step 4: Designing the Intervention.  The Function-based Intervention Decision Model is a tool used to help determine an intervention method.

Video 11: Monitoring Social Validity, Treatment Integrity, and Student Outcome Data

FABI Monitoring SV TI and Student Outcome Data TRANSCRIPT

This brief video discuss the importance of monitoring social validity, treatment integrity, and student outcome data in tandem throughout the design, implementation and evaluation of FABI.

Video 12: Overview of FABI Step 5: Testing the Intervention

FABI Step 5 TRANSCRIPT

This brief video introduces viewers to Step 5: Testing the Intervention.  This is the fifth step in a five-step systematic approach to designing, implementing, and evaluating functional assessment-based interventions. This video describes procedures and tools to support this process.

Video 13: Phase Change Decision Making

FABI Phase Change Decision Making TRANSCRIPT

This brief video introduces viewers to a resource on visual analysis to help guide the phase change decision process with voice over presentation and the Functional assessment-based intervention process guide: Visual analysis: Guiding questions for phase change decision.  Viewers may click through a PowerPoint or video presentation found in our resource section: FABI Implementation Materials.
