Step 6: Develop a prompting plan to remind students about the expected behavior

Although we hope that the precorrection will be effective in pre-empting challenging behaviors for all students in the classroom, in reality we know that some students will need something more. It is therefore important to come up with a proactive plan for how to prompt those students who do not respond to the general precorrection. One option is to use a gesture, such as holding a hand in the stop position or holding a finger to one’s mouth to indicate the need to be quiet. Alternatively, the prompt may be verbal, such as giving a reminder about the expectations or counting down from 10. Environmental prompts may also be used, such as posting a sign with the expectations on it or putting tape on the floor to indicate where students should line up. Finally, manual prompts could include scanning the room or standing close to a student who requires additional prompting (Haydon & Scott, 2008).
