Step 3: Adjust the environment

The third step is to make antecedent adjustments to the context(s) identified in Step 1 to reduce the likelihood of challenging behaviors occurring and set the stage for the desired behavior to occur. Adjustments can be made to one or more aspects of the context. One possibility is to alter the environment, such as changing the seating arrangement in the classroom or incorporating more structured recreation opportunities on the playground. Another possibility is to make changes to your own behavior, such as scanning and walking around the classroom more often (see the module Low-Intensity Strategies: Active Supervision). It is also possible to make changes to the schedule, such as moving an activity earlier in the day or at the very end of it. You might review the integrated lesson plan to see how to weave precorrection and other strategies into daily instruction.
